ICANN86 for ENS
ICANN86 created three new bodies on alternative and blockchain naming.
- SSAC blockchain work party. A work party chaired by Rick Wesson is integrating other naming systems, "aimed at technologies in the blockchain space," into the DNS. RSSAC-SSAC open mic
- New study group on alternative root systems. ICANN launched it during the meeting, with a small team. At-Large OFB-WG
- Blockchain evaluation board. ICANN set up a technical evaluation board for "blockchain-based innovation and how it might be integrated or work with the DNS." At-Large regional leaders
- KYC for AI agents. GoDaddy and Identity Digital floated identity verification for autonomous agents. AI and DNS abuse
- "Recreate hosts.txt." John Levine called blockchain naming an attempt to rebuild the flat pre-DNS host file. SSAC lightning talks
- Name collision. SSAC's collision guidance is built into the 2026 new-gTLD round (applications close Aug 12), which decides what enters the DNS root. new gTLD round
Questions that touch ENS
- Will AI agents drive demand for machine-centric identifiers, and is the technical community working on it?agents Simone Catania, Euralo → Ulrich, ICANN · Identifiers at ICANN
- How will ICANN respond to the Linux Foundation and IETF “agent DNS” drafts now circulating?agents Huda Shehi → Lauren Weisinger, SSAC · AI and DNS abuse
- Should AI agents be in the PDP-2 API definition, or do DNS-abuse AI concerns wait five years?agents Crystal Ando, Google → Keith Dracic · RySG work session
- Is there an ICANN policy on punycode, and are emojis allowed in domain names?confusability Adrian Block → Ulrich, ICANN · Identifiers at ICANN
- Does Mandarin encoding work the same as the IDN XN-- mechanism?confusability Jia Wei, TWNIC → Ulrich, ICANN · Identifiers at ICANN
- What sets pricing for IDN variants, auction or another mechanism?IDN Samuel Karioki → Pitinan Piyakulwijit, ICANN · IDN, how it works
- Make UA readiness mandatory in public procurement, since only 10% of top-1000 sites accept IDNs (proposed).UA Sal Yaquobi, NextGen → Barry Leba · NextGen presentations
Who is working on it
- Rick Wesson chairs the SSAC work party on blockchain-into-DNS integration.
- Ram Mohan (SSAC chair) frames it; "alternative namespaces" is one of SSAC's five keystone topics.
- John Levine and Lauren Weisinger (SSAC) raised the hosts.txt critique and the agent-DNS question.
- Michael Palage spoke this meeting on registry / RSP economics, not blockchain. ASP platform
